Arx3D Services

Arx3D provides a range of IT and IT-related services, agressively priced and specifically designed to meet the needs of small and medium-sized Oil and Natural Gas Exploration and Production enterprises, including:

Data Management Consultancy,
Data Formatting and Loading Services

Data volumes continue to grow. Large organizations have dedicated Data Management groups but smaller businesses can easily find themselves overwhelmed. Anecdotal evidence suggests independent explorationists can spend as much as 60% or 70% of their time dealing with data management issues, locating logs, checking the contents of seismic datasets, moving files from tape to disc or vice versa, loading them onto workstations or into project databases, reformatting them to work around software incompatibilities, etc. etc. etc.

However, the same problems tend to arise repeatedly, and many data-related issues have simple, well-known and well-tested solutions. An experienced data management professional can make light work of such difficulties, quickly diagnosing and correcting data quality problems, setting up automated procedures to reformat data “on the fly”, and the like. Experience, though, is the key. And with more than twenty years experience dealing with geological and geophysical data Arx3D’s specialists can provide unparalleled advice on data formats and data storage and management issues.

Operating as a virtual corporation Arx3D effectively has no overheads and rates are consequently extremely competitive, depending on the exact requirement, location and length of contract. Customer-Driven
Joint Software Development

Few small or medium-sized enterprises possess the resources to undertake software development, yet the consultants who staff them typically have a lifetime of experience and many novel ideas for new applications. Unfortunately bespoke software development is not usually an option for an independent consultant or small E&P service provider.

Cost alone is likely to be prohibitive, but in fact the problems go far deeper. To get it right, modern software needs modern Object Oriented Design techniques. Right from the initial requirements-gathering phase through the object design phase to an implementation design making maximum use of tried and tested software patterns, software design is a highly skilled and specialised endeavour. You may know what you want, but can you express it in terms a contract programmer will understand and translate into fully functional code?

Sadly, too often the answer is no. The fact is, software projects fail more often than they succeed. Governments and multinational corporations can, perhaps, afford to shrug their metaphorical shoulders and try again, but for a small company with a big idea the risk is simply too great. And so, many excellent ideas wither.

This is where joint development comes in. Here at Arx3D we recognise what we’re good at and just as importantly where we’re not so strong. Half a lifetime in software development, much of it in the search for oil and gas, means we know what geologists, geophysicists and reservoir engineers want from software and how to develop software that gives them what they want. But precisely what an individual application should do, that must be user-driven.

Joint development is exactly that. Arx3D supplies the software design and development skills. The customer supplies the Earth Science insight. Arx3D writes the code. The customer tests it, on a real project. Together we create robust reliable software that meets a real need, and does it the way working explorationists think it should.

So what’s the catch? Well, there isn’t one really. Joint developments are undertaken free on the understanding the customer will buy the finished product (and why not, after all? It is, by definition, exactly what was wanted…) but all rights to the end product, including any intellectual property, remain with Arx3D. This way, small companies with no programming staff and without the cashflow to pay contract programming rates can get the software they need to do their jobs more efficiently and Arx3D gets a new product that’s designed to meet a genuine need.

Contract Programming
and Web Site Construction Services

The Joint Development scheme is fine in most situations, but occasionally you need dedicated I.T. skills.

Perhaps you want to modify a program you've used for years that’s no longer supported by the original vendor?

Or maybe you want to develop a unique web site? Because, make no mistake the Web is out there and increasingly is the business channel of choice. Yet many small and medium-sized E&P businesses remain invisible because they lack an adequate web site.

Being a virtual corporation Arx3D’s low overheads make it possible to offer I.T. services at very competitive rates, whether on a per-day basis or for a fixed price. And with more than thirty years of programming experience, in every language from Fortran and Assembler to C/C++, Java and HTML, on platforms ranging from IBM mainframes and MS-DOS PCs through every flavour of Unix workstation to Windows and Linux, coding everything from database search engines to real-time device drivers by way of CPU-intensive number-crunching seismic processing applications, there is almost nothing we can’t do.

So. Describe the programming work you need done, or sketch your ideas on the back of an envelope and find some sites you would like to emulate, then call +44 (0)1344 449 217 or +44 (0)7753 986 796 (mobile) or e-mail info@arx3d.com for a quote.
