Seismic File Dump Utility

Figuring out what, exactly, is in a seismic data tape or file can be a nightmare of counting through hex dumps. The seismic file dump and analysis utility sfd takes away much of the drudgery.

Working on either tapes or disc files, sfd can, of course, provide a simple hex dump of a dataset’s contents. But that’s hardly going to help very much… Instead the program’s strength is that it incorporates intelligence on the most important seismic data formats, SEG-Y and SEG-D, so it can interpret the dump for you. Among its features you have:

• the option to view integers and floating-point numbers as either hex or numeric values
• you can jump to specific records within the dataset and list their contents
• it’s also possible to jump to the last record in the current file and view its contents (a particularly useful feature when dumping tapes!)
• the program can scan a dataset and list off the trace range(s) from the headers and the maximum and minimum sample data values

In short sfd is the perfect tool for investigating seismic datasets.
